Lenovo Anticipates PC Price Increases in March Due to Memory Shortages
Lenovo has informed its channel partners that it expects to implement PC price increases in March, citing ongoing memory supply constraints impacting the technology industry. According to a letter obtained by CRN, Wade McFarland, Lenovo’s North America channel chief, indicated that certain products and configurations will see pricing adjustments. Specific details regarding which models and configurations will be affected are expected to be communicated in the near future.
Changes to Ordering Policies Across Lenovo Divisions
The letter highlights updates to the ordering policies for Lenovo’s Intelligent Devices Group (IDG), which oversees desktops, notebooks, and tablets. Similar changes are also being applied to the Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG), responsible for server solutions. Ryan McCurdy, Lenovo’s North American president, emphasized the necessity of these adjustments, stating, “We’ve absolutely had to adjust and continue to adjust [pricing]. There’s no way around it.”
Order Timing Critical for Current Pricing
Lenovo is advising partners to place orders before the end of February to secure current pricing ahead of the anticipated March price hike. As McFarland explained, “Pricing is influenced by both order timing and fulfillment timing, and Lenovo reviews pricing periodically in response to evolving market conditions.” The company’s proactive communication with memory suppliers has allowed Lenovo to notify clients of upcoming changes, helping to prevent unexpected pricing shocks that could influence purchasing decisions. Given Lenovo’s high sales volume—millions of PCs each month—even minor price fluctuations can significantly impact customer choices.
Shorter Price Quote Validity for Servers and Storage
Lenovo’s ISG division has also adjusted its pricing strategy for storage and server products. Price quotes on Lenovo’s internal bidding platform are now valid for only 14 days, while quotes on the external bidding platform are valid for 30 days. After these periods, prices are subject to change to reflect the latest supply chain developments, which are likely to result in higher costs.
Streamlined Product Offerings to Navigate Market Volatility
In response to the rapidly changing memory and storage market, Lenovo has recently streamlined its ISG product lineup. By reducing configuration complexity and consolidating product lines, Lenovo aims to offer enterprise customers simpler choices while adapting to volatile market conditions. This strategic move has reportedly helped the company manage the significant price increases seen in memory and storage components over recent months.
