GIGABYTE has introduced the AI TOP CXL R5X4, a cutting-edge expansion card designed to significantly increase system memory capacity using the latest CXL (Compute Express Link) technology. This innovative solution allows users to add up to 512 GB of additional memory to their systems, making it an attractive option for data-intensive workloads and AI applications.
Key Features of the AI TOP CXL R5X4
The AI TOP CXL R5X4 expansion card connects via a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot and is compatible with both CXL 2.0 and 1.1 standards. It features four DDR5 RDIMM slots, each supporting up to 128 GB ECC memory modules. Unlike proprietary CXL memory modules such as Samsung’s CMM-D, this card leverages standard DDR5 memory, offering users greater flexibility and a wider range of memory options.
The card measures 120 mm by 254 mm and is built on a robust 16-layer HDI PCB. At peak performance, it consumes approximately 70 watts of power and requires an 8-pin EXT12V connector for operation. Supported platforms include the TRX50 AI TOP, designed for AMD Threadripper processors, and the W790 AI TOP, tailored for Intel Xeon systems. It is important to note that not all PCIe slots on these motherboards support CXL functionality. For example, the PCIEX16_4 slot on the TRX50 AI TOP does not offer CXL compatibility. GIGABYTE advises users to confirm system compatibility before purchasing the expansion card.
Pricing and Availability
While GIGABYTE has not yet announced official pricing for the AI TOP CXL R5X4, industry analysts estimate a retail price between $2,000 and $3,000, based on similar CXL memory expansion products currently available.
